Hi, I’m Tanya Hart, a ski instructor in Niseko, Japan, .

My passion for skiing, local cuisine, and the calmness of the onsens inspired me to build Women on Edge — a space where women can ski, connect, and become more confident on and off the snow.

I hold multiple internationally recognised ski instructor certifications and believe in lifelong learning and progression — both for myself and my students.

Licences & Certifications

  • APSI Alpine Level 3

  • NZSIA Alpine Level 2

Education & Early Background

I’ve always followed a sports-centric path. At college and university, I studied sports science and outdoor education, combining movement, coaching, and the psychology of performance.
In 2018, I discovered ski instructing — and instantly fell in love with the mountains and snow. Trying to perfect the left’s and rights and and helping others do the same.

Professional Experience

With over ten seasons of teaching experience across Japan and Australia, I’ve been chasing winter year-round to refine my craft.
During the Southern Hemisphere winters, I teach at Thredbo Resort, before returning to Niseko each year to work with Far East Snowsports and host Women on Edge retreats.

I’ve taught:

  • Private and group lessons

  • Children and families

  • All levels — from absolute beginners to advanced skiers developing situational awareness and carving skills

My coaching focuses on confidence, body awareness, and creating a fun, supportive environment where every skier can find their flow.

Beyond instructing, I created Women on Edge, a boutique ski-retreat experience for women of all levels.
Our retreats combine skiing, Japanese culture, luxury accommodation, and connection — empowering women to grow their skills, confidence, and community on snow.

When I’m not skiing, I’m usually chasing a different kind of adventure — soaking in a mountain onsen after a hike, scouting new terrain for future retreats, or getting wonderfully sidetracked exploring Hokkaido’s backroads. I love stumbling upon hidden cafés, local produce markets, and quiet viewpoints that remind me why I keep returning to Japan year after year.
